Tenured or Tenure-track position in Social Sciences

This call for application is now closed.

The Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST) and Université Toulouse I Capitole, France, seek candidates for one open rank tenure-track or tenured appointment in Social Sciences. Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Anticipated start date: September 1st, 2016.

Applications from researchers in a large range of disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences are welcome: anthropology, biology, history, law, philosophy, psychology, and sociology, though motivated applications from outside these disciplines will be given full consideration.

We seek candidates with a strong research background in their own discipline, but willing and able to develop research projects drawing on IAST’s substantial interdisciplinary resources, including particularly the proximity of strong groups in economics (Toulouse School of Economics, TSE). We are open to a variety of research methods, including theory, field and laboratory experiments, observational field work, and the analysis of large secondary data sets. All research interests relevant to the broad study of human behavior are welcome, but interests close to those already developed at IAST will be given special consideration, including, to cite only a few:

  •  In anthropology and biology: evolutionary theory, and theoretical and empirical studies of family structure, ageing and the life cycle, public health, sexual selection, and evolution of cognition
  •  In history: quantitative economic history (cliometrics), empirical political economy in history, qualitative economic or social history
  •  In law: law and economics, corporate governance, criminology
  •  In psychology: cognition, the emotions, social trust, gender, group decision-making
  •  In sociology: network formation, the impact of networks on social outcomes, sociology of religion.

Due to specific recruitment channels this year in economics and in political science, priority will not be given to these disciplines, though qualified candidates are still welcome to apply.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to affiliate and collaborate with research groups in Toulouse or the local region with which the IAST has established strong links. These groups include Anthropologie Moléculaire et Imagerie de Synthèse (AMIS), Centre de Recherche Cerveau et Cognition (CERCO), Évolution & Diversité Biologique (EDB), Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT), and Station d'Écologie Expérimentale à Moulis (SEEM).

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment, have demonstrated excellence and independence in research, and have a record of publishing in top international journals.

A complete application must include a cover letter, a research statement, a complete curriculum vitae, 3 references and up to 5 publications. If the candidate is not able to provide reference letters at this stage, please provide an explanation in the cover letter.
