11th Toulouse Economics and Biology Workshop

June 3–4, 2024

Toulouse, TSE/IAST Building

The Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST) and the Toulouse School of Economics and Quantitative Social Sciences (TSE) has been hosted the 11th annual workshop on Economics and Biology, themed Inequality in Networks.

Background

Research on social networks emphasizes that social relations provide individuals with essential access to resources, opportunities, and information. Fundamental mechanisms of network formation, such as homophily, can contribute to and amplify preferential access to such resources, often resulting in greater disparities than expected based solely on initial differences. The resulting disparities, whether they be social, economic, or cultural, pose significant challenges and opportunities for individuals and societies. Evolutionary anthropologists, biologists, sociologists and economists alike have therefore devoted a significant amount of attention to the following question, which is proposed to be the central question of the workshop: What are the determinants and the consequences of inequality in networks?
